Perlis Grapes Garden

For this entry, I want to tell my readers about one of places you can visit in Perlis.  As you can see in the picture above the place I about to tell all of you readers is "Taman Anggur Perlis" or "Perlis Grape Garden".   It's located at Jalan Kaki Bukit, Kangar.

Under the garden roof with a lot of grapes.

The sweet White Malaga.

The Garden area is about 100 hectare.  You can find about six species of grapes planted in here.  There are IAC grapes that originate from Brazil, Black Queen from Japan, Black Opal from France, White Malaga and Barbarossa from Spain and lastly Dunkelfelder from Germany.

In the Black Opal Grapevine

In contrast to popular believes that grapes only can grow in cold climate area, actually grapes are non-climacteric type of fruit which means it is also can grow in tropical and hot climate area.  Grapes fruits grow in clusters.  Grape plant need a lot of sunlight to grow healthy and of course the right kind of soil.  Grape plant need certain volume of water to grow perfectly.

Too much water will make the grape fruits taste sour.   Grape plant is best planted in closed and protected area from direct wind and rainfall.  This is because the grape's buds that soon will grow into fruits will fall easily if exposed to direct strong wind and rain.

This is the look of the enclosed grapevine from the outside.

Apart from being eaten raw, grapes can be used to make jam, juice, jelly, wine, raisins, vinegar, and many kinds of food.  This garden open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. except for Monday.  Ticket price are RM3 for adult and RM1 for children below 12 years old.  If you interested to plant grapes in your own backyard, you can purchase grapes seedlings for RM15 each.  You also can purchase fresh grapes from the garden for RM20 per kilogram.

If you interested you can contact Perlis Department of Agriculture at 04-9770433 or you can visit their website here.  Okay, see you in my next entry.  Stay raw and ready for more Fantastic+Merapu Adventures :D

  1. I find that there is a lot of confusion on the naming of grape plants as every cultivar seems to have tens if not hundreds of synonyms.

♥ THE SO-CALLED IAC IS ACTUALLY THE ARMENIAN DABOUKI (previously known as the White Malaga or Malaga Blanc from Armenia)

There are more than 40,000 varieties of IAC grapes though the number recognised by VIVC is much less than that !

Since IAC (Instituto Agronomico de Campinas) is an institution with over 40,000 cultivars, calling a grape plant as "IAC" is as good as calling a grapevine "European" grape.

Our so called IAC looks very much like the Armenia (Dabouki) White Malaga.

Nowadays, the EU has restricted the name "Malaga blanc or White Malaga" to the Spanish Teneron from the Malaga district.

The best and most authoritative place to look for the names to grape cultivars are from VIVC (Vitis International Variety Catalogue)

Have a look at all these VIVC pictures of ARMENIAN DABOUKI grapes in the VIVC website.

Note: IAC (Instituto Agronomico de Campinas)

PLEASE GO TO THE VIVC LINK GIVEN ABOVE AND SEARCH FOR "DABOUKI" and click on the Dabouki from Armenia.

There are 6 pictures there which show the Armenian Dabouki grapes (previously known as White Malaga or Malaga Blanc from Armenia) and these pictures show that the Armenian Dabouki is actually a grape plant incorrectly named as "IAC" in Malaysia.

  2. There has been a lot of confusion over what is "White Malaga or Malaga Blanc" grapes.

Previously, all the five types of white grapes are differentiated by qualifying with the country of origin e.g. White Malaga from Armenia (Dabouki), White Malaga or Malaga blanc from France (Semillon), White Malaga from Spain (Teneron) etc.

Now only the White Malaga from Spain (Teneron) is allowed by the EU to have exclusive right to the name "White Malaga".

Have a look at all the VIVC (Vitis International Variety Catalogue) pictures of the so-called White Malaga grapes from

    1) SPAIN (Teneron_White Malaga)

Large round to oval white grapes. Terminal shoots are white

Now is the only one allowed to be
called White Malaga under EU regulation. White Shoots, Large Oval Grapes

It is the "White Malaga" grown in Thailand, but the present so-called long White Malaga is probably a variant or actually some other type of grape cultivar.

    2) ARMENIA (Dabouki)

Very red new shoots, round to slightly oval grapes and look exactly like the so-called IAC (Instituto Agronomico de Campinas).

    3) FRANCE (Semillon)
Very red shoots, small round grapes...the grapes looks exactly like those of the Armenian Dabouki.

    4) ITALY
(Muscat of Alexandria) White shoots, small round grapes

    5) MOLDOVIA
(Coarna alba) White shoots, large oval grapes
